Welcome to the POLK COUNTY OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT (PCOEM) web site. PCOEM is charged with the responsibility of reducing the loss of life and property and protecting our critical infrastructure from natural and man-made disasters. The PCOEM Office successfully accomplishes its mission through a comprehensive, risk-based emergency management program of mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery.

     POLK COUNTY, while blessed with a diverse geography, is vulnerable to a wide variety of natural and man-made occurrences...droughts, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, wild fire, winter ice storms, as well as industrial, transportation accidents and terrorist attacks. In order to protect public safety and health, PCOEM develops emergency plans, and conducts training and exercises to make sure that the County and Cities are prepared to respond and recover from any major emergency situation.

     Most citizens in POLK COUNTY have learned from long and bitter experience that emergencies can and do occur at the most unexpected times. This contributes to our success in getting citizens to prepare for emergencies before they strike. In an effort to encourage families and individuals to enhance preparedness, much of the information on the PCOEM web site has been dedicated to help residents prepare for the unexpected emergency.
